How to Maintain a Mechanical Watch

1. Protect it from water damage.

Even if your timepiece is water resistant, it is not a good idea to put it on the water. Even a water-resistant watch can become susceptible to serious water damage if the seals and gaskets are not maintained properly. Make sure to have the mechanical watch tested every 12 to 18 months.

One of the most important watch care tips you should also consider is to avoid soap, salt water and chlorine. Just clean it with a soft cloth and fresh water.

If you are underwater while wearing the timepiece, never pull the crown. This simple action can case the water to leak into the watch.

2. Clean it properly.

By cleaning the watch’s exterior, you can prevent lots of foreign objects like dust, sand, sweat and dirt from getting inside it. It can also extend the life of your timepiece, and keep it looking nice. If own metal watch straps, clean it with a soft toothbrush.

3. Wind your watch.

If your mechanical timepiece needs to be wound, wind it a consistent time daily. The best time to wind it is during the morning, before strapping it on. Even if a timepiece would last one week without being wound, trust me, it will work better if it’s completely wound. By winding it daily, you can prevent the lubricants from congealing.

How to wind the watch? Turn its crown clockwise, and see to it that it is not overwind. In case you feel a bit of resistance. stop winding it.

What to Avoid

Looking for the best mechanical watch in Malaysia is a challenging task. Thus, once you get
hold of your precious timepiece, you should take care of it well. Here are some of the things that
must be avoided.

    1. Chemicals like solvents, detergents, fragrances and cosmetics.
    2. Magnetic fields. Modern timepieces are anti-magnetic, yet you should still be careful.
    3. Extreme temperatures. Don’t rapidly move from cold to hot temperatures.
    4. Never set the date if the time is between 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Changing the time around these hours can damage the mechanical movement’s gears.
